Asbestos is a natural fibrous mineral mined from rock found in many countries. It is made up of tiny fibres that as strong as steel but can be woven like cotton and are highly resistant to heat and chemicals.
Asbestos mineral is found in 3 general forms namely:
- Crocidolite (blue asbestos)
- Amosite (brown asbestos)
- Chrysotile (white asbestos)
It is generally accepted that blue asbestos is the most potent or dangerous and white asbestos is the least potent, although all types of asbestos are dangerous. Blue and brown asbestos has not been imported into the UK for many years although white asbestos was only banned in the UK in 1999.
Because of its fire resistant properties, asbestos was likely used as a building, insulation and heat protection material from the 1950's to mid 1980's in Great Britain. It was used in a range of industries and there are still many thousands of tons of asbestos present in buildings in Great Britain today.
