Future Of Asbestos
There are currently 1,800 to 1,900 deaths per year in Britain as a result of asbestos related illnesses. This number is expected to increase significantly and is not expected to peak in the UK until between 2015 and 2020.
The British Medical Journal has previously reported that half of all cases of asbestos diseases are in people now aged over 70 and 80% of cases are male. The BMJ has called for further research into asbestos related disease to help manage patients, diagnose asbestos related diseases earlier and provide appropriate treatment.
The British Lung Foundation has recently proposed a charter and has commissioned a petition to increase awareness of mesothelioma, the most serious of asbestos related illnesses.
