Post-traumatic amnesia is a period that a person suffers usually after coma or a long period of unconsciousness. The person is conscious and appears responsive and they may even be able to talk to family members and medical staff, however after a short time, the person will forget all recollection of conversations and actions. The person will be disorientated and may not know the date, where they are, or why they are there. Uncharacteristic behaviour such as agitation and aggressive outbursts have been known to occur, but the person does not later recall these actions and should not be held responsible during this period of time. Gradually a person will come out of PTA and the length of time a person is in a PTA is also indicative of the long-term effects of the head injury.
