"Market commentators respect this first class claimant firm for its capacity to devote a huge amount of resources and lawyers to a case. The practice is respected for its expertise in pharmaceutical and medical litigation." Chambers and Partners 2003

Although regulatory authorities and governments work hard to make the world as safe as possible for people to live in, it is unfortunately true that occasionally things go wrong and people are injured or worse - whether by a defect in the construction of an aircraft, by a pharmaceutical product which causes injury or by a series of unnoticed errors by medical professionals.

It would be beyond the resources of almost any private individual to bring a claim for an injury in these circumstances, and the only practical way of making progress is for claimants to group together, to share resources.

Alexander Harris has experience of dealing not only with the logistics of running cases of this complexity, but also in addressing the scientific issues. So often these cases involve as many scientific questions as they do legal ones.
We often take the lead in cases involving groups of clients, even if those clients have initially contacted other solicitors. Such cases are known as group actions, multi-party actions or (in America) class actions or mass torts. The multi-party action department handles cases where individuals have been injured and wish to pursue claims against large organisations such as government departments, international companies or hospital trusts. Members of the team are considered as leading specialists in this area and have built a distinguished reputation for piloting complex cases through to a successful conclusion. We have a team of scientists on our staff, to assist with research and supporting our experts, and we have nurses who help to analyse and sort out medical records.
Alexander Harris' recent cases are a good example of the things which can go wrong: from the use of the hallucinatory drug LSD to treat depression, to Silicon breast implants and more recently the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.

The firm has championed the cause of women whose unborn children were damaged by contamination of food by listeriosis and in one major case obtained damages worth £2million for patients given the wrong doses of radiotherapy at a Staffordshire Hospital.Treatment of back pain was radically revised after lawyers led by Alexander Harris pursued a long campaign against Glaxo, the manufacturer of the drug Myodil.

Alexander Harris are also one of only 18 firms nationwide who in 1999 became founding members of the Legal Services Commission's (Legal Aid Board) first multi-party action solicitor's panel.
