Alexander Harris supports the work of many charities and help groups throughout the year.

Back in 1999, we introduced the 'Charity of the Year' scheme, whereby we nominated a charity to support, help raise funds and enhance their profile. We feel that we can actually make a difference.

As a specialist health law firm, our charities are always chosen on the basis of something which reflects the work that we do, therefore we support many health related charities.

During the next 12months we will be working closely with five remarkable charities: -

ASPIRE- Association for Spinal Research Rehabilitation and Reintegration, BIBIC - British Institute of Brain Injured Children, CBIT - Child Brain Injury Trust, Douglas Bader Foundation and the Limbless Association.

Each charity provides support, advice and rehabilitation to those who have suffered a catastrophic injury.

We unfortunately see a number of serious personal injury cases, and handle many brain, spinal and amputation claims through to a successful conclusion. Therefore we understand that all aspects of life, school, work, family, relationships and recreation will change.

The above charities know all to well, how important it is for someone who has suffered a serious injury to have the very best possible legal advice where there is the potential of making a legal claim. Choosing the right solicitor can not only help someone through this difficult period but can mean the difference between winning and losing a case, or have an effect on the amount compensation awarded.

In addition in the past twelve months members of our staff have raised money for the following charities through a range of fundraising events and dress down days, these include: -

Spinal Injuries Association
Headway
Home Start Hackney
Edwards Trust
The East London Cabbies
BBC Children in Need Appeal
CAREducation Trust - Tsunami Disaster Fund
ASPIRE - London Marathon
BASIC
Comic Relief
Chaigley School
Francis House Hospice
Autism Independent
Children's School Appeal - Mbarara, Uganda
Alder Hey Hospital

ASPIRE - 2004/2005 Charity of the Year

Each year we select a nominated charity to support, raise funds and profiles from them. This way we actually feel that we are able to make a difference!

AspireOur charities are always chosen on the basis of something, which reflects the work that we do. As a specialist health law firm, we raise monies for health related charities, therefore we are delighted to announce that this years' chosen charity of the year is ASPIRE - Association for Spinal Injury Research Rehabilitation and Reintegration.

ASPIRE is a national charity. It was established to enable people with spinal cord injury throughout the UK to lead fulfilled and independent lives both at work and at home.

ASPIRE's aim is to create opportunity, choice and independence for disabled people in society. Their work includes purchasing specialist equipment for individuals who are paralysed, running personal development training courses, research technology to benefit people with disabilities and promoting integration between disabled and non-disabled people through out sport.

In 2003/2004 we chose to support and raise funds for childhood epilepsy services throughout England & Wales.

Through discussions with consultant paediatric neurologists, our aim is to purchase small items of equipment to assist in training, diagnosis and the performance of tests - for example video camcorders to enable parents to record fits to help with diagnosis: TV videos to help entertain children whilst undergoing long tests and to assist in the training of medical practitioners to recognise different types of fits.

In 2001/2002 we chose Basic (Brain And Spinal Injury Charity).

At Alexander Harris, we unfortunately see a number of serious personal injury cases that involve severe brain and spinal injury damage. For many we are able to secure a successful settlement that helps provide the care and financial support needed for the future. However no amount of compensation can make up for the often-devastating results of injuries to the brain or spine. In 2001 we became aware of the work of BASIC and we were amazed!

When Bolton businessman Derek Gaskell brought his wife home after life saving brain surgery at Hope Hospital she couldn't do anything for herself. After many years she made a good recovery but the horror of this experience inspired Derek to establish a charity to support people in similar situations. In 1994 BASIC was launched. They are now a national organisation that help victims and their families following brain or spinal injury. They have drop in centres through out the country. BASIC is also affiliated to the Greater Manchester Clinical Neuroscience Centre - one of the largest in the country and people travel from far and wide to be treated here.

One of BASIC's major achievements over the past year has been the setting up of the Neurocare Centre, within walking distance of Hope Hospital. This is one of only two centres in the UK offering specialist support. They currently have to raise £2,000 a week to keep the Centre staffed and running. Throughout the next 12 months Alexander Harris are determined to help raise money for this remarkable charity through fundraising activities and donations.
