Following the recent withdrawal of Vioxx in October 2004, new concerns have been raised over Vioxx's competitor drug, Celebrex.

Associated cardiovascular risks
Use of Celebrex (celecoxib), which is manufactured by Pfizer was suspended in a clinical trial following concerns over its safety. The arthritis drug, which belongs to the same class of drugs - cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors, as Vioxx was found to double the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The study conducted by the US National Cancer Institute used large doses of the drug in cancer prevention trials. The study showed increased cardiovascular risk.

The news is alarming as most of the British patients taken off Vioxx are likely to have switched to Celebrex.

Bextra
Earlier this month, the US Food and Drug Administration and The New England Journal of Medicine issued warnings about Pfizer's Bextra, another one of the COX-2 inhibitors drugs.

Investigations
Alexander Harris are currently coordinating enquiries relating to the withdrawn arthritis drug Vioxx and are interested in hearing from patients who have suffered adverse side effects as a result of Celebrex.
