Holiday Illness Causes Heart Attack

A teacher has been awarded £130,000 compensation after being forced to give up work as a result of suffering a heart attack caused by catching salmonella on holiday.

The heart attack was brought on by Salmonella food poisoning caught on holiday in Sicily.

Now living in Spain, Graham Morgan Smith and his wife Deborah booked their holiday through tour operator JMC, to stay at the Hotel Antares in Sicilly, in August 2002.

It was during this holiday that Mr Morgan Smith became ill, suffering from diarrhoea and stomach cramps, these continued when he returned home from his holiday. Two weeks after returning home he started having severe chest pains and was rushed to hospital where he suffered a heart attack.

Holiday illness

With the physical impact of his illness Mr Morgan Smith found it difficult to return to work and suffered a breakdown. Not being able to work he took early retirement after 20 years as a teacher on the grounds of ill health.

After initially refusing to pay compensation JMC were eventually forced to pay Mr Morgan Smith £130,000 after Irwin Mitchell Solicitors successfully pursued the case.
