On the same day that the New York Stock Exchange announced a fall of 3 per cent in shares of Merck, the company who make the drug Vioxx which was withdrawn after concerns over safety, it was reported by a national newspaper that four times as many people as originally thought have died or suffered harmful effects as a result of taking the drug.
Research by Dr David Graham at the US Food and Drug Administration originally raised controversy late last year over the safety of the Cox-2 range of painkillers, including Vioxx.
It was originally estimated that 28 000 Americans died or suffered heart attacks or strokes as a result of taking the drug. Recent analysis of the data suggests that this figure is likely to be much higher, with up to 139 000 people having suffered as a result of taking Vioxx.
Merck insist they acted in the best interests of patient safety during the time the drug was available.
Vioxx solicitors, Alexander Harris have heard from over 200 people who have used Vioxx and believe that they have suffered ill health as a result.
