A second outbreak of norovirus aboard the Black Princecruise ship has been reported. Over a hundred passengers are believed to have had their holidays ruined as a result of this highly contagious virus.

This follows an outbreak of the same virus which affected over a hundred passengers aboard the Fred Olsen cruise ship last month.

Last month there were similar outbreaks of norovirus on board the Sea Princess and Van Gogh cruise ships. A number of passengers became ill with vomiting and diarrhoea.

The Black Prince left Edinburgh for an excursion to Greenland and Iceland on June 22, and arrived back early in Leith on 5th July.

Norovirus is a highly contagious sickness bug, which spreads quickly in confined spaces. Symptoms include nausea, sickness and diarrhoea.

Specialist injury and illness overseas solicitor Suki Chhokar called for slower turn around times whilst in port to allow for the boats to be thoroughly cleaned before taking on new passengers, and more routine cleaning during the voyage.

"Basic food and water hygiene levels must be in place and regular cleaning of key areas such as the toilets and kitchens is essential. Once an outbreak has been identified health advice must be given to all existing passengers and any new people joining the boat must be warned. After an outbreak the boat must be deeply cleansed and sanitised before any further passengers board," said Suki.
