Law Firm Alexander Harris spoke yesterday at the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) conference: After Shipman: Trust between Patients and Doctors.

Alexander Harris represented over 200 families of victims of Harold Shipman. They also represented families of the victims of nurse serial killer Beverley Allitt.

Speakers included doctors, healthcare professionals, health Journalists, and Patients' representatives, lawyers and Judges.

Dame Janet Smith, who chaired the Shipman Inquiry also spoke at the conference. She spoke of the lack of political will to tackle the issues raised by the Shipman Inquiry, and expressed concern that not enough was being done by the Government to implement her recommendations. She picked out specifically a lack of progress over drug controls and checks on doctors' competence.

Alexander Harris highlighted a need to change the way people and doctors think - to seeing a need for systematic change to prevent another Shipman.

Alexander Harris spoke about regaining trust between patients and doctors, about gaps in the system that the Shipman Inquiry had highlighted, and the need to implement new measures to improve patient safety.
