Researchers at the University of Texas have devised a new test for bladder cancer - which provides results within an hour.

Almost eighty people diagnosed with bladder cancer were tested in clinical trials. The NMP22 test detected bladder cancer in 55 per cent of people, compared with 16 per cent in the old style cytology test.

Meanwhile scientists in Cambridge have developed a simple screening test for mouth cancer which could be adopted for wider screening.

Results of a study led by Dr Nick Coleman of the Cancer Cell Unit at the Medical Research Council were published yesterday in the British Journal of Cancer.

According to research carried out at the University of Michigan medical school, research-grade ginger can stop cancer cell growth in Petri dishes as effectively as platininum-based chemotherapies.

The research suggests that ginger may offer a two-pronged attack on cancer cells - making them commit apoptosis and autophagy.
