Sandra was admitted to hospital suffering from pain in her side. One of her ovaries was found to be a little enlarged.
She underwent a diagnostic laparoscopy procedure and both ovaries were found to be healthy.
She underwent a laparoscopic sterilisation the next month. A few weeks later she attended A&E suffering with pain and was given antibiotics through an intravenous drip.
The following year she saw her GP complaining of right loin pain and shooting pain when passing water. On examination she had a tender right kidney.
An ultrasound scan revealed a cyst behind her bladder. She was referred to hospital urgently for an ovarian cystectomy.
The same day she was admitted as an emergency to the hospital suffering from increased pain and vomiting. A scan performed the next day showed no evidence of the previous cyst. Sandra was started on antibiotics and discharged
After being reviewed at the hospital it was arranged that she be admitted for mini-laparotomy and right salpingo-oophrectomy (RSO).
The second operation was carried out incorrectly - instead another procedure was performed.
She was re-admitted to hospital suffering from pain three months later.
The next year she underwent a total abdominal hysterectomy.
Post-operatively she suffered from heavy vaginal bleeding which was not properly dealt with.
Three days after being discharged Sandra was re-admitted to hospital with increasing pain and vomiting. An ultrasound showed a dilated right kidney, and an intravenous pyelogram showed a blockage of the ureter. A nephrostomy tube was inserted, and then a stent was inserted.
Sandra now suffers from scarring, and the after effects of all these operations combined. She suffered a post-operative haemorrhage following the hysterectomy and damage to her right ureter resulting in urinary problems. She has had to rely on care from her parents for day to day living.
Clinical negligence solicitor Caroline Stokes settled Sandra's case.
