In a direct response to the final report of the ShipmanInquiry the government today set out the scope for a review into patient safety to be led by the Chief Medical officer, Sir Liam Donaldson.
In a move towards increased transparency, patients will be able to ask to see doctors' disciplinary and performance records. The plans also include a move to take away the GMC's power to judge doctors.
Sir Liam is expected to publish his report by the end of the year.
Ann Alexander, Managing Partner said:
"The Shipman Inquiry has highlighted the need for much tighter regulation governing doctors, particularly regarding whether they are fit to practice. I welcome the review by Sir Liam Donaldson and look forward to its conclusion. I hope to see much tighter regulation put in place as a result of his findings."
