The family of a girl whose life has been turned upside down as a result of the actions of a Nottinghamshire GP have today spoken through their solicitor.

Dr Bellipady Sudharam Rai was this week struck off following his appearance before a Fitness to Practice Panel which concluded on 16th November. Dr Rai was struck off as a result of indecent, inappropriate and dishonest behaviour and for numerous breaches of Good Medical Practice.

"He destroyed her life" said the family through their lawyer Edel Quinn of health law firm Alexander Harris. "My clients feel totally let down" added Edel. "They cannot understand how he got away with it for six years. The system is clearly flawed. And we are aware of others who were given stolen prescriptions for drugs by Dr Rai and are in a similar situation."

"I am now instructed to pursue a claim against Dr Rai and Newark and Sherwood Primary Care Trust. The allegations are of the utmost severity. They involve the selling of prescriptions to my client even when he knew that she had become addicted to the drugs involved. It is also alleged that the PCT were negligent in failing to properly control the number of prescriptions which Dr Rai was prescribing over such a long period and that they should have been alerted to the possibility of wrong doing much earlier."

The family of one victim who has chosen to remain anonymous said: "He got my daughter hooked when she was only a teenager. He totally destroyed her."

Dr Rai was found guilty of gross professional misconduct this week by the General Medical Council who are responsible for regulating doctors. They will erase him from the medical register within 28 days unless he appeals.

"With all the publicity regarding controlled drugs especially since the Shipman case you would think that lessons should have been learnt. Clearly there is still a lot more work to do" added solicitor Edel.

The GMC concluded: "The Panel has taken into account the serious nature of the findings against Dr Rai, including indecent, inappropriate and dishonest behaviour, his failure to act in his patient's best interests and his numerous breaches of Good Medical Practice. It considers that Dr Rai has shown a persistent lack of insight into the seriousness of his actions..... The Panel has concluded that Dr Rai would continue to pose a significant risk to the public if he were permitted to practise. For these reasons, the Panel has determined that for the protection of members of the public, it is necessary to suspend Dr Rai's registration forthwith."
