Victims of child abuse at care homes in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Kilmarnock have been awarded compensation by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).
All were had lived as children in Nazareth House children's homes up to fifty years ago.
At a hearing last month almost twenty former residents were awarded compensation ranging from £1,000 to £7,500 from the CICA.
The children were abused, beaten or humiliated by some of the nuns who ran the homes.
There may be up to a hundred other people who suffered abuse at the homes and who are also eligible to receive compensation.
Over twenty people are expected to have their case heard at appeal hearings later this year in Glasgow.
Specialist criminal injuries solicitor Tracey Storey said:
"I welcome the CICA awards that have been made to these former residents. However, the awards seem low, bearing in mind what these people have endured."
"The Irish Redress Board in contrast has been far more generous in their awards to people affected by childhood abuse in Ireland. The CICA tariff scheme must be reviewed to ensure that it properly compensates people who have suffered terrible abuse and who have lived with the affects of abuse throughout their adult lives."
"Additionally, the law on time limits needs to be changed to allow people to bring late claims in the courts. It can sometimes take years for people to speak out about events and the law should be flexible enough to recognise this."
