A coalition of GPs is lobbying the British Medical Association to allow doctors to help terminally ill patients to die. The issue will be debated at the BMA conference next week.

Currently a doctor helping a patient to die would face up to 14 years in prison.

The proposals will be opposed by doctors who believe cases like that of Harold Shipman illustrate how a law like this could make patients increasingly vulnerable to attacks of this kind.
