The General Dental Council (GDC) have launched an enquiry

A specialist dentist is at the centre of a massive investigation into the treatment of child patients.
Sale Orthodontist Melvyn Megitt today faced 8 charges before the General Dental Council. The enquiry is expected to involve scores of patients most believed to be children.

The charges include allegations that he "failed to exercise a proper degree of skill and attention" and behaved in an "inappropriate manner" towards the patients and parents.

He is further alleged to have failed to render assistance or medical aid to a patient who lost consciousness in his surgery and have acted against the best interests of the patients by trying to treat many on any surgery day.

Rachel Grice was 10 years old when she was referred to him by her dentist in 1990.Mr Megitt fitted her with a brace and continued to see her every 6 weeks. It was 6 years before the brace was finally removed. Rachel's mum Helen said "I was extremely shocked by the length of time the braces had to stay on. We had to go back every few weeks or more for treatment. We were stunned and outraged when we were told that they should have been taken off years before."
Solicitors Alexander Harris of Altrincham are to sue Mr Megitt on behalf of two clients, including Rachel. Partner David Harris said "We will be calling on expert orthodontic witnesses who will testify that treatment given by Mr Megitt to our clients was excessive and unnecessary."
