Following the explosion yesterday at an oil depot near Hemel Hempstead, solicitor Richard Follis, who represents a number of people affected by toxic emissions from the Broomfield Tip in Wigan, said:
"The effect of pollution from noxious fumes such these on households, and the individuals who live in them can vary enormously. Local topography, prevailing wind direction and even the effectiveness of window seals can mean that houses only a short distance apart suffer markedly different effects and levels of pollution. Even within adjacent houses individual health issues such as respiratory disease can mean that some people suffer far more than others."
"Photographic and video records should be made of the smoke to help prove later what residents had to suffer. Details of exactly where and when such footage was taken should be kept for later use in evidence. Anyone feeling ill should take appropriate medical advice."
"Sufferers may also be entitled to legal compensation, and should seek appropriate advice."
