A man who posed as a psychiatrist for five years was sentenced to ten years imprisonment by a Crown Court Judge last week. Barian Baluchi, formerly a mini cab driver had registered with the GMC, despite having no professional or medical qualifications. He carried out surgery leaving patients in pain, and gave evidence in court on a number of occasions.

Law firm Alexander Harris said: "It is of grave concern that this man was able to fool so many people and in particular the General Medical Council. The role of the GMC is to protect patients and, yet again, they have failed. Public confidence in the monitoring of doctors continues to diminish.

"We need to see much tighter regulation, and the implementation of the recommendations of the Shipman Inquiry in order to prevent further cases of this kind. I look forward to the speedy conclusion of the review being chaired by Sir Liam Donaldson, the Chief Medical Officer, into patient safety, and hope to see much tighter regulations put in place as a result of his findings."
