One Saturday morning Bernie noticed a swelling and redness on his right forearm. It looked like a bite or a scratch.

It looked as if it had become infected so his wife, Lillian contacted the hospital. She was told to bring him in on the Monday.

However the swelling on the arm continued to grow. When it had doubled in size, Lillian rang the hospital again. She was told there were no spare beds and that he should wait until Monday to come in.

The redness continued to increase and Bernie was seen by a GP that evening. The GP prescribed oral antibiotics. Lillian persuaded him to ring the hospital, who advised that Bernie be brought in to the Accident and Emergency department.

On admission Bernie was desperately ill with rigors, tachcardia and a grossly infected arm.

He was given a range of intravenous antibiotics until the infection was identified.

He was in hospital for a further two and a half weeks.
As a result of the delay in treatment Bernie developed blood poisoning in his arm.

If there had been no delay the gross blistering would have been avoided.

He also appeared to suffer with depression as a result of what happened to him.
