Organised by the British Lung Foundation (BLF) in conjunction with a number of other groups, Action Mesothelioma Day on the 27th February 2006 aims to raise awareness of the disease and to bring it to the forefront of the political agenda by presenting a charter signed by thousands of people to Parliament. The charter outlines changes that need to be made and ways in which support can be given to the thousands of people who currently suffer from mesothelioma in Britain.

Specialist industrial disease Solicitors Matthew Garson and Gina Heather have signed the BLF's online mesothelioma charter to help support people with mesothelioma and prevent future spread of the disease. The BLF expect to get up to 20,000 signatures.

A number of MPs will be present at a parliamentary reception at the House of Commons on 27th February. You can email your MP online at the BLF to lobby him or her to attend the meeting.

Alexander Harris will be supporting the British Lung Foundation by raising money as part of a 'dress down' day scheme. All the money raised from dress down day in February will go to the charity to support them and the work they do to help people suffering from lung cancer.

"We strongly support the British Lung Foundation's Mesothelioma Charter which aims to raise the awareness of this devastating illness and to campaign for better support and treatment for those suffering from mesothelioma," said specialist Industrial Disease Solicitor Matthew Garson.

"The number of people suffering from mesothelioma is going to increase significantly over the next 10-15 years."

"65,000 people are expected to die of mesotheolioma in the UK between 2002 and 2050, and 250,000 Western Europe by 2035."

"It is vital that appropriate plans are put in place to provide suitable care and treatment for people suffering from mesothelioma."

"Mesothelioma progresses very quickly. Early diagnosis is therefore very important, and research into potential treatments is to be welcomed."

"Protection of employees is vital to ensure no further exposure to asbestos and stop the spread of this virulent disease."

More than 730 000 people have currently sought compensation for an asbestos related disease. The number has been growing steadily since the 1960s, and is likely to continue growing. It is expected to peak in 2015. (American study by the Rand Corporation; a non profit research organisation.)
